Easy Grow Roses: Hardy Shrub Roses
Roses are among the most beautiful flowers on earth, and with proper care, they can be easy to grow. The key phrase is “proper care”, because sometimes you will do everything right and your roses still won’t realize their full potential.
Normally, this results from planting a species of rose that is not ideal for your growing zone or location. Sometimes it takes a few expert gardener tips to get the most from your roses (and we’ll share those tips here at EasyCareRoses.com ).
If you’re a beginner, or just looking for easy grow roses, consider buying shrub roses. They’re quite hardy and don’t require a whole lot of care beyond the basics. Of course, you’ll need to follow standard rose care planting and watering procedures, but other than that, shrub roses are about the easiest roses around.
Some of the best and hardiest varieties of shrub roses are Canadian roses – especially for those of us who live in colder climates. I live in the Chicago area (Zone 5) and I’ve had wonderful success with the Canadian Explorer series of roses. These roses generally need no special winter protection and are known for their superior disease resistance and fine ability to withstand cooler climates.
Shrub roses in general tend to be less fussy than other types of roses and not as prone to insect problems. They are not “high maintenance” like some of the hybrid tea roses which need more pruning, spraying and attention to look their best.
Plus, even if a particularly harsh winter damages the tops of the shrub, the plant will bounce back in spring. We always recommend a particularly hardy shrub rose called Hope For Humanity because not only is it ideal for beginners, it is exceptionally good looking as well. Other good selections are the Canadian Explorer series roses such as “Morden Blush” (pink and ivory), “Charles Albanel” (mauve) and “Winnipeg Parks” (deep pinkish red).
